Chapter 6

“You’re both idiots,” I yelled, hands planting on my hips. “It’s too soon to go back to Columbus. Are you forgetting the population is over 900,000? That’s way too many people who could potentially be zombie monsters right now.”

What the hell was the matter with these two jugheads? I swear the brothers found more ways to get into trouble than anyone I had ever met in my life.

“You can’t go,” I huffed, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Nat, baby,” Zeke began, placing his arms on my shoulders and giving them a squeeze. “We need to know how bad it’s gotten out there. Maybe the military has everything under control. All of the flesh-eaters from downtown could already be quarantined or eradicated. We don’t know shit. Sure, staying here would be okay, but knowledge is power, babe. Ignorance is dangerous.”

I couldn’t fault his logic, but I still wasn’t convinced.

“Nat,” Ty called out, gently pushing his brother aside as he approached and tilted my chin up. The tortured, determined look in his eyes was unnerving. “Honey, we know this isn’t easy. We’re facing decisions no one should ever have to make. Everything we do, every choice we make, is about staying alive and unharmed. If we don’t find out whether things are better or worse, we’re just sitting in the dark. I won’t let anything happen to you because I didn’t do everything possible to ensure your safety. Okay?”

“We won’t let anything happen to you,” Zeke corrected, giving Ty a funny look.

“That’s what I meant,” Ty replied hastily. His fingertip brushed the edge of my jaw before he leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on my forehead. “Let us figure this out, Nat, please.”

I searched his eyes, confused by the swirling emotion within. Ty was hiding something serious because I’d never seen him so flustered or determined. Was this about Tara? Losing her must still hurt. I know I was struggling with all that had happened at the hospital. Why didn’t it occur to me that Ty was hurting too?

“You miss her, don’t you?” I asked softly, placing my hand against the stubble on his face. “I’m sorry, Ty. I haven’t been a good friend to you lately.”

He startled, then flushed a delicate pink. “Nat, that’s not—”

“I know it is, okay? I get it. I miss her every day and knowing what happened to her and how she died, helpless to prevent how she ended up,” I choked off, swallowing hard. “I’ve been blocking how awful it was because I didn’t want to remember. I just want to stay in this perfect bubble and away from the real world. But that’s not possible, is it?”

Ty shook his head, pulling me into a hug. I wrapped my arms around his waist, squeezing as I felt him tremble. “No, honey. It’s not.”

“Alright.” I could put on my big girl panties and act like a mature adult. “You guys check out the city and find any Intel you can. It has to be done.
